Songs of Gaelic Scotland

Anne Lorne Gillies
Songs of Gaelic Scotland
Birlinn, 2005
This sumptuous paperback book contains a huge number of Gaelic songs, given with musical notation, English translation and historical and performance notes. They are all from Anne's personal repertory, but she has deliberately learned a huge number of songs in various styles, including through her work with the School of Scottish Studies where she learned a number of very old songs from Willie Matheson. Although many of the songs in this book are from the last two hundred years, there are a fair few that are from the 17th century and would originally have been sung with Gaelic harp accompaniment, and it is interesting to have them put in the context of the living tradition of Gaelic song.
