The Atlantic Celts - Ancient People or Modern Invention?
British Museum Press, 1999.
Secondhand paperback, £12
This provocative books asks whether we are right to use the word “Celtic” to refer to ancient British and Irish peoples and cultures. The author examines historical sources from the ancient Classical authors through to medieval and then 18th and 19th century antiquarian writers, to try and understand who and what “the Celts” were at different times in history. The conclusions make uncomfortable reading even now, 12 years on. This is a really important book for anyone involved with studying the history and culture of Britain and Ireland, and whether you agree or disagree with the author’s conclusions, you cannot afford to be ignorant of the facts he presents and the arguments he presents.
