Syntagma Musicum II, De Organographia parts I and II
English translation by David Crookes, Oxford University Press, 1986
Syntagma Musicum was a massive music encyclopedia published in three volumes in German and Latin between 1614 and 1620. Volume 2 was called "De Organographia" or descriptions of instruments, and contained description, analyais and detailed measured drawings of many common and exotic instruments. This book presents an English translation of the first half of the text, covering all instruments except organs (the subject of the second half). It also includes facsimiles of all of the original woodcut illustrations. It is of interest to Gaelic harp scholars as it includes a drawing and description of an Irish harp, with a tuning chart that shows a partially chromatic tuning. Paperback.
