Gestures book cover

“The Gestures” section is the heart of my book. It is based on my own practice, developed through performance and teaching. This section of the book presents a series of gestures, organised by families, and each one named, notated with fingering and damping, and described in prose.

Though the book writes them all down, it is my intention that these are memorised and used in a non-literate way, as they would have been in the old oral traditions.

My naming scheme is deliberately eclectic; I use Gaelic names only when they are unambiguously suitable. Most of the names I use are rather prosaic descriptions in colloquial English rather than formal titles. This is because the gestures are meant to be instinctive and natural feeling.
